RRs most anticipated films of 2018 - Can we rise above sequels and superheroes?

Are you looking forward to 2018?

As we move into a new year of life, one thing that springs to mind is the new batch of films in 2018. In our household, the discussion turns to the cinema regularly and at Reel Dialogue we are always looking out for the latest films that will provide a focus on a Biblical framework. As the new year approaches, sequels, superheroes and Disney dominate the conversations and considerations, but will these movies make the list.

Considering the anticipated films is always a daunting task, because there is no way of knowing the quality of these films. There are some huge films being released this year, but big does not mean they will be great. How good the inhabitants of the list will remain to be seen, but we can still look forward to what is to come. The list is not set up in any particular order.

Here are the films we are looking forward to seeing, how about you?

1. Ready Player One - When the creator of a virtual reality world called the OASIS dies, he releases a video in which he challenges all OASIS users to find his Easter Egg, which will give the finder his fortune. Wade Watts finds the first clue and starts a race for the Egg.
2. Annihilation - A biologist signs up for a dangerous, secret expedition where the laws of nature don't apply.
3. Tomb Raider - Can the Academy Award winner, Alicia Vikander, rejuvenate the Lara Croft franchise? This reboot is based on a fiercely independent daughter of a missing adventurer, who pushes herself beyond her limits when she finds herself on the island where her father disappeared.
4. The Upside - Based on the classic French film, The Untouchables, this comedic look at the relationship between a wealthy paraplegic and an unemployed man with a criminal record who's hired to help him.
 5. Ocean's 8 - The all-female version of Ocean’s 11… There is cause for some reservations, but it does have a great cast. Debbie Ocean gathers a crew to attempt an impossible heist at New York City's yearly Met Gala... hmmm... not new, but a great cast.
6. Avengers: Infinity War - The beginning of the end of the current MCU, will it live up to the hype?
7. Incredibles 2 - Despite the sequel fatigue of Pixar, we hope this is as great as the first film.
8. Solo: A Star Wars Story - The production issues could make this one of the first Star Wars flops, but there is a new hope (yep, we did that) that Ron Howard can pull this one together.
9. Ant-Man and the Wasp - Loved the first instalment of this superhero caper and he was one of the best parts of Captain America: Civil War. The question is can this micro-hero pack a punch again?
10. Red Sparrow - Ballerina Dominika Egorova is recruited to 'Sparrow School' a Russian intelligence service where she is forced to use her body as a weapon. But her first mission, targeting a CIA agent, threatens to unravel the security of both nations.
11. A Wrinkle in Time - Reservedly intrigued… After the disappearance of her scientist father, three peculiar beings send Meg, her brother, and her friend to space in order to find him.
12. Isle of Dogs - Wes Anderson is back in this quirky, animated film. Our family loved Fantastic Mr Fox, can this one rival that fun, family film? Set in Japan, Isle of Dogs follows a boy's odyssey in search of his dog.
Other releases of note in the first half:
Deadpool 2, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, Black Panther, The New Mutants, Pacific Rim: Uprising, Peter Rabbit, Early Man, & Mission Impossible 6
Films that will open the door for Biblical discussion
1. Mary Magdalene - The story of the lesser-known follower of Jesus Christ, but can the production team honour the Gospels while building an unknown story within the narrative?
2. Paul, The Apostle of Christ - Nothing is known about the film except that the story covers Paul's life as he goes from the most infamous persecutor of Christians to Jesus Christ's most influential apostle.

Reel Dialogue: Asking the bigger questions
1. What are your thoughts on the list for the first half of 2018?
2. Would you choose any of these films or are there others you would add?

You might like to add some to the list, send them our way.
